Cloudy Aquarium Water

Usually in 1-2 days after you fill new aquarium with water the water becomes cloudy. Hobbysts who have no experience start to change the water, but it's a mistake, the problem can not be solved in this way. Do nothing, just wait. In a week the water will get clear again. The reason of this is a "biological balance". BB is a right proportion of microorganisms, funguses, algaes, organic and non-organic matters in the water. This proportion is not stable in time. It depends on many factors, such as volume of the tank, temperature of the water, type of gravel, illumination, aeration and others; Vital functions of plants, fishes, molluscs also is influence on this balance. It's really very compex process, but fortunately aquarium is a system with self regulation, like organism. After the balance is set it's mostly not difficult to maintain it.
Usually the more is the volume of the tank the more stable the balance is. To speed up the setting of the balance in just-started aquarium add there some water from ballanced aquarium. Adding some gravel works even better. However even without such addings the balance usually gets normal in about a week.
Do not put fishes in newly-started aquarium until the water becomes clear.
There are more difficult cases if water becomes cloudy in "old aquarium".

There are several types of cloudy water:
Type of cloudy water Most probably reason Way to fix the problem
"White" or "milky" cloudy water in new aquarium Too much infusorias Just wait. In a week the water will get balanced and clear. Do not change the water until it becomes clear. To speed up the process add some water and/or gravel from well-balanced aquarium of similar type.
Water stays "white" in new aquarium more than 10-12 days Too much organic matters infusorias consume. Most probably the gravel wasn't washed well enough Restart the aquarium. wash the gravel carefully
Yellow-green or bright-green water 1. Too much light.
2. Too much dry food (more than fish can eat in 2-4 min at a time)
1. Decrease ilumination (cover tank with black paper for a couple of days).
2. Put live daphnias in aquarium (they comsume euglenas and green algae).
3. Do not feed fish for 3-5 days; change type of food.
4. Add more plans
more power remedies:
streptomycin 1g per 100 liters (use carefully!) or
"Tetra Algizit" (read its instruction!)
Dark-green water A kind of problem caused by blue-green algae.
(more often b/g algae covers glasses, gravel and plants with slimy sheets and smells of swamp)
1. Power filtration.
2. Water changing to decrease concentration of nitrogen compounds.
3. Do not feed fish for 3-5 days; change type of food.
4. Physicaly remove algae sheets from glasses.
5. Some kinds of this algae (not all!) can be eradicated by icreasing temperature of the water (use carefully!).
6. Erythromycin phosphate 0.5g per 100 liters. (use carefully!)
Brown water(1) A kind of problem caused by brown algae.
(more often brown algae covers glasses, gravel and plants as brown spots.
1. Increase ilumination.
2. Physicaly remove algae sheets from glasses.
Brown water(2) Organic matters from snag, peat etc. 1. Boil snags.
2. Activated charcoal filtration.
